Numerical scaling techniques for evaluating generative models of orthographies
نویسنده
چکیده
Research presented introduces a new approach for empirically investigating generative or inductive-like systems. Two versions of a generative model of the uppercase English alphabet are examined. The approach is both formal and interdisciplinary, applying techniques developed by psychophysics to a problem that is typically linguistic. Experimental results presented illustrate empirical methods and analytic tools used, and demonstrate how the techniques advance the psychological study of the English alphabet. Two different theoretical models of the alphabetic system are evaluated strictly on the basis of empirically observed two-alternative forced-choice data. Scaling methods described produce a numerical scale for generated alphabetic items which permits informative comparisons between scale values and across independently derived scales. The scaling theory used is a variant of Thurstone's Case V model. The methods can also be utilized to further model construction. Implications of the findings for the existing body of writing-system research, and the generalizability of the approach to other domains of investigation are also discussed. Scaling and Fractal Concepts in Saturated Hydraulic Conductivity: Comparison of Some Models
Measurement of soil saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, is normally affected by flow patterns such as macro pore; however, most current techniques do not differentiate flow types, causing major problems in describing water and chemical flows within the soil matrix. This study compares eight models for scaling Ks and predicted matrix and macro pore Ks, using a database composed of 50 datasets...
متن کاملA new 2D block ordering system for wavelet-based multi-resolution up-scaling
A complete and accurate analysis of the complex spatial structure of heterogeneous hydrocarbon reservoirs requires detailed geological models, i.e. fine resolution models. Due to the high computational cost of simulating such models, single resolution up-scaling techniques are commonly used to reduce the volume of the simulated models at the expense of losing the precision. Several multi-scale ...
متن کاملGenerating Scaled Replicas of Real-World Complex Networks
Research on generative models is a central project in the emerging field of network science, and it studies how statistical patterns found in real networks could be generated by formal rules. Output from these generative models is then the basis for designing and evaluating computational methods on networks, and for verification and simulation studies. During the last two decades, a variety of ...

متن کاملScaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
